As indicated in its title, this guide to local officials had a secondary aim: to educate laypeople about the limits of their powers in order to prevent the "arbitrary measures of those, who too frequently want to exercise an authority which they are not warranted to do by law." According to the preface, the second edition contains "new highway and turnpike acts [and] several very considerable improvements, particularly a new act concerning the settlement of those poor who are born in lying-in hospitals, and several new adjudged cases, essentially necessary for the direction of parish officers" (4). The title page says that this is the 2nd edition - enlarged to cover the law concerning Landlords and Tenants. It is divided into several sections: Game; Tithes; Highways; Turnpike Roads; Fishing, fish-ponds, rivers etc; making and duty of Malt; making and selling of Cyder, mum and perry; and growing, bagging and duty of Hops; landlords and tenants; cattle; corn; hay; straw; timber and other trees; Butter and Cheese. In full leather binding which is in very good condition apart from some slight wear to the front hinge. With original endpapers which are splitting at the hinge at the front. Contents are sound, clean and bright. With advert for the 'Modern Parish Officer' bound at the rear.

Scarce first edition of an anonymously compiled legal vade mecum for farmers and country gentlemen, with particular attention given to game laws, tithes, highways and turnpike roads, fishing, fish ponds and rivers, the manufacture of and duty on malt, and laws relating to the manufacture and retail of cyder, mum, perry, and hops. The work further gives details of "all the acts of parliament, and adjudged cases thereupon, relating to cattle, corn, hay, straw, timber and other trees, butter and cheese, and every other article in which the farmer or country gentleman is materially interested."
