Unbound. Etat : Near Fine. Group of 42 original comic strips. Each measuring approximately 23" x 6½". Pen and ink on Swarthmore artist boards, some pasted-on elements, such as King Features copyright information and the artist address label ("John Liney 497 Leonard Road Hunting Valley, Pa."). All but two of the strips are stamped on the rear with "Engraved by CP" and a date that is roughly a month before the actual date of publication. Overall near fine with a hint of toning, touch of edgewear and printer's marks at the margins; in one strip a character's position was altered by the artist resulting in some skinning to the surface on that panel. *Henry* first appeared in a single-panel comic in *The Saturday Evening Post* in 1932 by journeyman artist Carl Anderson and quickly grew in popularity becoming a daily strip in December 1934. The strip followed the oddly bald and largely mute Henry as he interacted with neighborhood kids, parents, and townsfolk through various sight gags and humorous situation. Henry did gain the ability to speak in his self-titled comic book, but the change never affected the comic strip. Seventy-year-old Anderson was delighted in his late-life success but by the 1940s he needed help keeping up with demand, so he hired Don Trachte to do the Sunday strips and John Liney the dailies. Following Anderson's death, each artist stayed on to produce the strip with Liney retiring in 1983. This collection of *Henry*, all produced by Liney in 1965, showcases the timeless nature of the strip, with humor centered not on current events or new technology, but simple human interaction and emotion. Each strips place Henry in relatable domestic situations made humorous by his naive and unexpectedly clever solutions to school, chores, bullies, romance, and overly serious adults. A charming collection of original comics strips of one of the longest running strips in American history.
