Little was a Sergeant in the 7th New Hampshire Infantry, and awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions near Richmond, Virginia, in September 1864. His citation reads "Gallantry on the skirmish line" that held back rebel cavalry north of the James River. Little left the 7th to accept a first lieutenant s commission in the 4th and later 29th U.S. Colored infantries. He ended the war in April 1865 with brevets for captain and major. The 7th New Hampshire was the sister regiment of the Seventh Connecticut, and the two units were sometimes jointly referred to as the "Seventy-seventh New England". The regiment served exclusively along the lower Atlantic; after duty in the Dry Tortugas, St. Augustine, and Fernandina, they moved to South Carolina and were engaged at Morris Island, Battery Wagner, and Fort Sumter. The 7th later fought near Richmond and Petersburg, and in the Fort Fisher assault. It lost 668 men killed and wounded during the war. Identified as one of the Fox 300 Fighting Regiments. This work is an extensive history of the Regiment with a complete roster and well illustrated with many soldier portraits.
