Reliure de l'époque de demi-maroquin cerise à coins, filets dorés portés sur les plats, dos à nerfs orné de filets gras en noir, filets maigres dorés sur les nerfs, doubles caissons d'encadrement dorés, large décor fleuronné doré, titre doré, filets dorés en tête et queue, date dorée en queue, tête dorée. Exemplaire revêtu d'une reliure décorative du temps de demi-maroquin. Il s'ouvre sur un titre-frontispice en regard d'une large vignette gravée en page de titre. L'ouvrage s'agrémente en outre de larges fleurons figuratifs par Charles Eisen. L'exemplaire a par ailleurs été truffé de 8 jolies planches gravées au trait. Belle impression sur vergé d'édition. Daphnis et Chloé, roman grec, est attribué à un certain Longus dont on ne sait pour ainsi dire rien de l'auteur. Si ce n'est qu'il pourrait être né à Lesbos. Le sujet de Daphnis et Chloé - Influencé par les Idylles de Théocrite - se distingue pourtant des autres romans grecs de par son décor bucolique et l?ironie constante qui préside au déroulement de l?action. Ce roman pastoral - et chef d??uvre de la poésie classique - met en exergue le thème mythique de l?exposition des enfants sous l?antiquité. Mis à l'index du fait de son caractère licensieux, c'est seulement en novembre 1809 que Paul-Louis Courier découvrit à Florence un exemplaire intégral du roman, ce qui lui permit alors d'en élaborer une traduction plus complète. Et bien des déboires aussi, du fait de la tâche d'encre qui maculait l'exemplaire après sa consultaton par Courier. Vicaire V, Manuel de l'amateur de livres du XIXème, 389. Coiffe de tête très légèrement élimée. Petit manque superficiel en marge gauche du premier plat. Petit manque angulaire affectant un feuillet. Quelques claires rousseurs dans le corps d'ouvrage. Not traced in BL catalogue, possibly a large paper copy of a 1779 printing of the 1780 edition mentioned in the BL catalogue which apparently was bound with no plates.
