Ajouter au panierFine. Etat : Hardcover. Limited edition. 4to. Two volumes. (4),xxviii,316;(4)273,(3)pp. One of 370 copies on handmade paper (of which 350 are for sale), this being copy number 268. One of the few copies bound in full brick-red morocco. Printed in red and black throughout in Caslon type, with 22 woodcuts reproduced from Wynkyn de Worde's folio edition of 1498. The text is a careful reprint from de Worde's folio of 1498 from the unique copy in the Rylands Library, never before reprinted, and bridges the gap between Caxton's edition of 1485 (reproduced by Sommer and later printed in facsimile by Scolar), and Wynkyn de Worde's edition of 1529, on which most modern editions are based. Sommer remarks that the woodcuts reproduced from the DeWorde 1498 edition represent the first attempt ever made of illustrating a text throughout with engravings. As for the text, the few pages lacking in the Rylands copy have been supplied, and indicated by square brackets, from the Caxton edition. Full contemporary brick-red morocco; spine titled in gilt. Top edges gilt in the rough. Marbled endpapers. This set is usually seen with the leather rubbed and degraded; this copy, however, is in fine condition with only the barest trace of rubbing. The printing of this work was completed on December 13, 1933. Most sets bear the imprint date of 1933, but others, like this, are dated 1934. Gaines, A21.

Half brick-red morocco, cream-colored cloth sides. Printed in red and black throughout in Caslon type, with 22 woodcuts reproduced from Wynkyn de Worde's folio edition of 1498. The woodcut illustratiosn in this copy have been hand-colored. We find no indication that the publisher offered a hand-colored edition, and so believe that a former owner commissioned them. They are delightful, colorful, and in keeping with the 15th century style. Gaines, A21.

Ajouter au panierLimited Edition. Thick Quarto. Two volumes in three limited to 108 signed and numbered copies. The present copy is number 27 signed by the publisher David Nutt. This is the original edition of William Caxton now reprinted and edited with an introduction and glossary by H. Oskar Sommer, and with an essay on Malory's prose style by Andrew Lang. Volumes one and two are the text volumes and volume three consists of studies on the sources and Andrew Lang's essay. x, [x1-xvi]424, 425-861 and xxv, 338pp. The editor, H. Oskar Sommers also bound in a note about the set. It is evident that this move was deaccessioned from a library noted by the small ink stamp to upper edges and apparently, the removal of a plate or pocket to rear pastedowns. In all regards, a handsome set bound by Mudie in 3/4 red morocco over red cloth, raised bands gilt with compartments lettered and decorated in gilt, all edges marbled with matching marbled endpapers, the front inner hinge is cracked through the endpapers but quite stable. A clean bright set without foxing save for an occasional bit of spotting to volume three. From the library of Sir James Liege Hulett with his bookplate. He was a British sugar magnate, politician, and philanthropist. Very nice.
