Hardcover. Etat : Good. No Jacket. 5th or later Edition. Surprisingly scarce, a boys' public school novel first published in 1910 that feels unlikely ever to be reprinted. Sample dialogue: "And now, fellows," said Mullens, "what's the programme to be?" "Jew-baiting!" cried Brigson, significantly. "Tossing!" said someone else." Brigson is one of the villains of the book, fag to a horrible bullying prefect called Porson ("He always licks his fags the first chance he gets".) Porson mistreats his new fag Carruthers, despite being warned by a master not to, and so (with a backstory of misdoings the previous term: Porson's brother was expelled) the plot (largely about scholarships) gets going. This copy is undated, but as with the other Mansford novel that we're selling this one was given as a Christmas present to a boy called Gerald, this one by his mother in 1926. Aside from her inscription at the front, there's no markings to the text, which is still largely well-bound, though the gutter is exposed between pages 128-29 and 144-45 and after the final page on the hinge with the endpapers. It feels solid enough reading through it. The front and back endpapers are a little browned and spotted and show some minor signs of silverfish activity, otherwise there are very few defects to the pages for a book that's nearly 100 years old. Externally, there's a crease down the middle of the backstrip of the spine and just a little bit of wiggle in the backstrip, otherwise the edges and corners have only minimal rubbing. There's a good piece about Charles Mansford by the historian Alwyn Turner on his Wordpress blog called Lion & Unicorn. (The piece is called Imperial fiction: Bully, Fag and Hero, published 25 September 2020. It's highly recommended. Turner has a good eye for quotations and understands this genre of book.) Please take a look at the photos supplied.

Hardcover. Etat : Good. No Jacket. 5th or later Edition. Surprisingly uncommon, with the front cover illustration that's then repeated in the colour frontispiece opposite the title page ("Evans slipped a noose over the victim's head and shoulders and ran it taut"). Inscribed on the half-title page, "With love from RON to Gerald. Xmas 1926, Good luck", and on the blank page before that, written in pencil in a different hand, is the name G. Hartley. Presumably he's the lucky (or unlucky) Gerald. The novel itself is very well described by the historian Alwyn Turner on his Wordpress blog called Lion & Unicorn. (The piece is called Imperial fiction: Bully, Fag and Hero, published 25 September 2020. It's highly recommended. Turner has a good eye for quotations and understands this genre of book, of which he judges Bully, Fag and Hero to be a "decent, very readable" example). The book itself is in good condition, with hardly any spotting to the body of the pages, and only a little around the edges of the pages when viewed as a block. The binding's still good, though there are a few places (eg pages 16-17, 96-97, 192-183) where the stitching is more exposed. Holding well, but exposed. The blue boards and front cover illustration are still quite bright but there is some rubbing around the edges and at the corners, most noticeably at the top and bottom of the spine and along both edges of the spine. Please take a look at the photos to be supplied. PS There's no date of publication in this copy. The novel was originally published in 1896. It was popular and went through several editions. Given the inscription dated 1926, it seems fair to assume this copy dates from some time in the early to mid 1920s.
