Hardcover. Etat : Fair. No Jacket. xliv, 427, [1] p. front. (port.) 19 cm. ; LCCN: 07-16594 ; LC: PZ3.M3368; Dewey: 843.31 ; OCLC: 5304500 ; brown blind stamped tooling shaken ; Translated from the French. With a memoir of the author. By Walter K . Kelly. ; This has been several times reprinted. The translation is a very free rendering of M. de Lincy's text ; wicked tales of amorous and erotic intrigues, thinly veiled as fiction, in fact relate to many true events in European history ; "Two children were born of the marriage of Charles of Orleans, Count of Angoulcme, a prince of the blood royal of France, and Louise, the daughter of Philip Duke of Savoy, and Margaret of Bourbon. The elder of the two was Margaret, the principal subject of this memoir, born on the nth of April, 1492 ; the younger, born on the 12th of September, 1494, was the prince who succeeded Louis XII. on the throne of France, February, 1515, under the name of Francis I.Amidst the multifarious occupations of her well-filled life, the Queen of Navarre found leisure to compose a great number of literary works, besides carrying on a voluminous correspondence with her brother, his ministers, and many other person. Her productions in verse, the greater part of which have been printed, consist of eight long poems on sacred, amorous, or historical subjects ; eight dramatic pieces, including four mysteries, two moralities, and two farces ; poetical epistles to her brother, her mother, and the King of Navarre ; and rondeaux, dixains songs, and other small pieces. According to the last editors of the Heptameron, some of Margaret's fugitive pieces, published by them for the first time, are superior as literary works to her more serious compositions, and in them alone are to be found the gaiety and grace for which she has been so much celebrated by her contemporaries." ; Partial contents: A woman of Alencon having two lovers -- Chaste and lamentable death of the wife of one of the Queen of Navarre's muleteers -- A king of Naples, having debauched the wife of a gentleman, at last wears horns himself -- Presumptuous attempt of a gentleman upon a Princess of Flanders, and the shame it brought upon him -- A boatwoman escapes from two Cordeliers, who wanted to force her, and exposes them to public derision -- Stratagem by which a woman enabled her gallant to escape, when her husband, who was blind of an eye, thought to surprise them together -- Trick put by a mercer of Paris upon an old woman to conceal his intrigue with her daughter -- A mull having lain with his wife, believing that he was in bed with his servant, sends his friend to do the same thing ; and the friend makes a cuckold of him without the wife being aware of it -- Deplorable death of a lover in consequence of his knowing too late that he was beloved by his mistress -- The loves of Amadoitr and Florida, wherein are seen several stratagems and dissimulations, and ihe exemplary chastity of Florida -- An odorous adventure which befell Madame de Roncex at the Franciscan Monastery of Thouars -- Facetious sayings of a Cordelier in his sermons .-- Incontinence and tyranny of a Duke of Florence, Just punishment ol his wickedness -- A captain of a galley, under the cloak of devotion, fell in love with a demoiselle, what happened in consequence -- Subtlety of a lover, who, counterfeiting the real favourite, found meant to recompense himself for his past troubles -- A lady of the court, seeing herself neglected by her husband, whose love was bestowed elsewhere, retaliated upon him -- A Milanese lady tested her lover's courage, and afterwards loved him heartily -- King Francis gives a signal proof of his courage in the case of Count Guillaume, who designed his death -- A lady tests the fidelity of a young student, her lover, before granting him her favours, etc, etc ; FAIR. Book.

Hardcover. Etat : Good. 1st Edition. 12mo. pp. 12 p.l., 537, [1]blank, [8]table. woodcut headpiece & initials. 19th century calf, rebacked with gilt spine mounted, all edges gilt (repairs to title & last 2 leaves affecting 2 digits in imprint date & with loss of a few words on final leaf, title faded). Constructed on the lines of the Decameron of Boccaccio, the work consists of seventy-two stories told to each other by a company of ladies and gentlemen while resting on a journey home. It was originally published anonymously with a different format and only 67 stories as Histoire des amans fortunez in 1558; the first edition to contain the 72 stories and to bear the title L Heptameron was published in 1559. Marguerite was Queen-consort to Henri II of Navarre, the sister of the future François I and the grandmother of the future Henri IV. "She was a prolific writer, leaving a voluminous correspondence and numerous poetic and dramatic works, though her most lasting achievement is undoubtedly the cycle of 72 tales known as the Heptameron." (The New Oxford Companion to French Literature) "It is a delightful book, and strongly characteristic of the French Renaissance. The sensuality which characterized the period appears in it, but in a less coarse form than in the work of Rabelais; and there is a poetical spirit which, except in rare instances, is absent from Pantagruel. (Encyc. Britann., 11th Edn.) Of special note is tale 67, pp. 538-42, which relates a story told to her by Captain Roberval, who was appointed viceroy of New France in 1540 and directed to sail with Jacques Cartier to establish a colony on the St. Lawrence River. The story concerns a relation of Roberval, an unnamed young woman (Marguerite de la Roque), whose conduct leads him to abandon her together with her lover on an island called Île des Démons on the St. Lawrence. Marguerite, sister of Francis I of France, and wife of Henri II of Navarre and grandmother to Henri IV of France died in 1549, in 1558, Pierre Boaistuau published the first edition of her novels under the title of 'Histoire des Amans Fortunés', which he dedicated to Margaret of Bourbon, Marguerite's niece. The Heptameron is the best known and the most popular of all the old collections of tales in the French language, and they in turn have inspired the work of many of France's best known fablers: Brantôme, Lafontaine, Montaigne and so on. It includes reflections on religious topics which lean towards the cause of the Reformers; "and through the whole work the monks, especially the Cordeliers, are treated with much severity, and are represented as committing, and sometimes with impunity even when discovered, the most cruel, deceitful, and immoral actions" (Walter K. Kelly). No definitive text of "Les Nouvelles" was published before that of the Société des Bibliophiles Français in 1853. Marguerite became the most influential woman in France during her lifetime when her brother acceded to the crown as Francis I in 1515. Her salon, known as the "New Parnassus", became famous internationally. She and her work were admired internationally: she is said to have influenced the Protestant Reformation in England, through her relationship with Anne Boleyn to whom she may have given the original manuscript of her poem 'Miroir de l'âme pécheresse; and she was a correspondent of many of the great thinkers of the day, including the Dutch humanist Desiderius Erasmus, who wrote to her: "For a long time I have cherished all the many excellent gifts that God bestowed upon you; prudence worthy of a philosopher; chastity; moderation; piety; an invincible strength of soul, and a marvelous contempt for all the vanities of this world. Who could keep from admiring, in a great king's sister, such qualities as these, so rare even among the priests and monks?" Catalogued by Kate Hunter.
