Frontispiece + vii [=title +dedication +contents] + [1p =blank] +170pp Ownerhip on front pastdown and first gathering a bit proud with fore-edge to first leaf sl.chipped. Some pale foxing but pages supple and except for one small ink fleck pages are unmarked. First edition was 1814 so this book must have achieved instant popularity for the publisher's to issue a new edition every 18 months! Moon 72[4] 1 volume. Hardcover.

In a quarter calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart, with rubbing to the boards and spine, resulting in a small amount of loss of leather to the rear joint. Light bumping to the extremities. A small amount of loss to the head of the spine. Light marks to the boards. Hinges are starting but firm. Light spots to the paste downs and endpapers. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto of the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the occasional scattered spot. Very Good. book.

Third edition. viii, 172pp. With an engraved frontispiece. Original publisher's red roan-backed marbled boards, ruled and lettered in gilt. Extremities rubbed, some surface loss to bumped corners. Inked ownership inscription to recto of FFEP, slight loss to lower corner of leaf N5, very occasional spotting. Maria Elizabeth Budden (c.1780-1832), popular Regency children's author, who at her zenith wrote more than a book a year for her publisher John Harris. First printed in 1814, in her prefatory remarks Budden describes her work as 'a concise and simple elucidation of the several articles of daily use and daily consumption'. Structured as a conversation between children and a truly encyclopaedic mother, the subjects discussed are as diverse as silk, amber, rum, spermaceti, and paper. Moon 78 (3). Size: 12mo.
