Etat : NUOVO. L'autore ha scritto il libro probabilmente quando era al servizio di un alto prelato nella repubblica di Venezia. Era un gentiluomo; infatti, possedeva anche uno stemma araldico e si definì uno Spoletano, probabilmente per timore di essere confuso con un suo omonimo: un'architetto di Lucca, presente nello stesso periodo a Venezia dove ha stampato libri di architettura. Timore non infondato visto che il Suo lavoro veniva e viene spesso attribuito all'altro Martinelli, 1650 - 1718, ( anche il Museo delle Scienze di Firenze, prima della mia visita, attribuiva la paternità del libro all'architetto lucchese). Il volume fa il punto su come si costruiscono gli orologi, quelli da appartamento e quelli pubblici, utilizzando come forza motrice i quattro elementi: l'acqua, la terra, l'aria e il fuoco. Orologi sonori e muti, questi ultimi inventati da oltre un decennio dai fratelli Campani di Castel San Felice. Dall'indice: . Per fabbricare il vaso di moto veloce per battere le ore. Modo di aggiustare il contrappeso. Come si possa fare un'orologio senza ruote e senza contrappesi. Per fare una mostra simile a quelle che si vedono nelle facciate delle Chiese e delle Torri. Modo di ridurre il detto orologio dentro una piccola cassella da tenere sopra del Tavolino. Orologio che in uno stesso tempo mostra l'ora, il giorno della Settimana, del Mese e il far della luna. Modo d'aggiungere alli suddetti orologi la Campana per il battere delle ore. Per fare un orologio perpetuo con acqua viva al quale non bisogna mai alzare il contrappeso. Modo di fare il Vaso o Tamburo per l'orologio a polvere. Preparazione della Materia per gli orologi d'Aria o Vento. Modo di componerli. Per aggiungere il suono. Dell'orologio da Fuoco. Questo testo fu tradotto in francese dal matematico Oznam nel 1699 e utilizzato per la voce Horlogerie dell' Encyclopèdie di Diderot e d'Alambert. L'importanza del libro deriva dal fatto che l'autore, non essendo un artigiano e non avendo, perciò, nessun interesse a nascondere i segreti del mestiere, descrive i vari modi per costruire gli orologi. Ma l'autore non si limita ad avere un approccio tecnico scientifico. Ogni capitolo è introdotto da un proemio filosofico dove si sente l'influenza magico-alchemico rinascimentale della credenza che l'uomo possa trasformare la natura delle cose. Un esempio. L' acqua è un mostro fiero e indomabile che posto in schiavitù e nella prigione di qualche tubo o canna o canale racchiuso, sono mirabili gli effetti, come quello di misurare un mostro ben più lubrico e vorace, il tempo, un verme consumatore delle cose composte. Così l'orologio farà l'officio di buona sentinella, ricordandoci con il suono d'una campana che il tempo non offende chi ben lo spende e solo passa per chi vanamente lo trapassa. Come descrivere questo volume in poche righe? Possiamo fare dei cenni solamente su alcuni spunti di riflessione: il disegno, per esempio, del frontespizio, è forse il primo quadrante in cui le ore sono disegnate in senso orario, ( nello stesso anno, 1669, l'orologio della controfacciata della Chiesa di Santa Maria in Fiore a Firenze, affrescato da Paolo Uccello nel 1443, viene modificato disegnando le ore in senso moderno. Nel 1968 è stato restaurato, riportando alla luce l'affresco primitivo ed è, probabilmente, l'unico orologio al mondo funzionante all'antica. Da ricordare, inoltre, che l'ora prima era quella dopo il tramonto e la XXIV era l'ultima ora di luce. Il giorno iniziava con il tramonto. Era l'ora all' italiana. Per misurare il giorno nel modo contemporaneo nel nostro Paese bisognerà aspettare l'arrivo delle truppe napoleoniche che diffonderanno l'ora alla francese ). Altra nota. Per esempio con i fondi del terremoto è stato appena restaurato il quadrante di un orologio ( a Leggiana, sulla strada per Colfiorito ) che per funzionare utilizzava l'acqua del Menotre. Per concludere non si può non notare che il nostro autore è ben inserito nella cultura europea ed è ben informato, nonostante le difficoltà di comunicazione e le divisione politiche, sulle ultime scoperte scientifiche. cm.17x24, pp.circa 150 con 17 tavv.nt. Leggermente ondulate le carte, peraltro esemplare genuino e ben conservato. Edizione originale, piuttosto rara. Così si esprime il severo Cocognara (4370): "Professa l'autore d'essersi servito delle migliori Guide come lo Stringa, il Bardi, il Sansovino col Martignoni, e il Boschini L'opera non è infatti spregevole". Cfr. Anche Fossati-Bellani (2263) e Cicogna il quale attriguisce l'opera all'abate Ganassa.

First edition of a work which is considered, together with the one by Capriglia, the best on clocks in 17th century Italy.
