(no dust jacket) [spine slightly turned, modest wear to extremities, slight bumping to upper and lower corners (with slight exposure of boards at lower tips); old bookseller's rubber stamp on front pastedown (Bertrand Smith's Acres of Books, Long Beach, Calif.) as well as a stamp reading "USED MAGAZINES 5¢ UP / 2421 W. Washington"; remnants of a removed label on the front endpaper, suggesting that this might have been a rental-library book at one time]. Novel about a young woman who lives a somewhat drab existence in a provincial English village, but seems to find romance (in one form or another) whenever she goes on holiday to Paris. (The crossings referenced by the book's title are of the English Channel, at least one of which was by air.) The novel, the author's first following a number of published short stories, plays around a bit with the narrative chronology, with the first of its six chapters entitled "The End," and winding up with "And the Beginning" -- a storytelling device that led at least a couple of contemporary reviewers to describe its technique as "stream of consciousness." (I suspect, though, that this may have been triggered by something in the publisher's jacket blurb -- which unfortunately cannot be confirmed by this jacketless copy -- more than by any actual, you know, reading. I can report, at least, that the prose style, at every place I dipped into the book, appeared to be quite straightforward and un-stream-like.).
