This book was originally published in 1899 by William Heinemann, this new edition has the benefit of an authoritative foreword and a historical introduction by David G. Chandler who was a British historian whose study focused on the Napoleonic era. As a young man he served briefly in the army, reaching the rank of captain, and in later life he taught at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Sergeant Bourgogne's memoirs remain perhaps the best account of Napoleon's disastrous retreat from Moscow when thousands of men succumbed to cold, disease and starvation deep in an alien and hostile country - their plight made worse by the remorseless attentions of marauding Cossacks.
