Hardcover. Etat : Very Good+. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good dj. First Edition. [light shelfwear to bottom edge, a bit of foxing/spotting to top of text block; jacket lightly soiled, tiny tears at upper spine extremities]. Historical novel of ancient China, "the story of a Chinese Helen of Troy who, by her taste and intelligence, raised the T'ang period to its highest level, and, by her wantonness, quenched it in a sea of blood." The lady in question was Yang Kuei-fei, mistress of the Emperor Ming, who was put to death at age 37 on his orders (long story, look it up). Known as one of "the Four Beauties of ancient China," her story has been the subject of many works of literature, opera, theatre, film and television; the version most likely to be familar to Western audiences was the 1955 Japanese film PRINCESS YANG KWEI FEI, directed by Kenji Mizoguchi. This was the second novel by this author who published her most famous work, the Amazon-Lesbian classic "The Green Scamander," a few years later.

First edition of this historical novel set during the Trojan War, and the Amazons coming to aid Troy in its hour of need against the Greeks. Meagher's novel has been considered to be one of the lesbian historical novels reflecting an intense need among lesbian authors and readers for representations of a lesbian past through historical fiction. A contemporary reviewer notes that "One feels a somewhat uncomfortable and defiant undercurrent of perversion." See: Wolfskins and togas: Maude Meagher's The Green Scamander and the lesbian historical novel (1996).
