This is a War Time book, as noted to verso of the title page, this also confirms this book as a 'First edition - clearly stated'. Notably an uncommon book. Green cloth boards with white text on spine. The covers are bright and this includes the vibrant white titles, clean and square, free of any inscriptions; the dust jacket is with edge wear, not price clipped, with 3.00$ present and correct to inside flap. There is a very small piecemissing to the edge of the rear panel. xvii, 388 p. 21 cm. The contents of this book are articles written by the author in 1943 and 1944 and republished from the Washington Post. { verso t.p.} The book looks at the Social matters in the Usa during this period, the author concludes that these are essentially old problems of social maladjustment. Commending local initiative she also recognizes the need for a federal program on health, education, and general welfare. Meyer's marriage to the financier Eugene Meyer, son of Marc Eugene Meyer, provided her with wealth and status that enabled her to influence national policy, such as social welfare programs. Meyer lobbied for the creation of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare and for the U.S. government to provide federal aid to states for education. President Lyndon Johnson credited Meyer for building public support for the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, which for the first time directed federal assistance towards school districts that served children from low-income families. She advocated for equal employment and educational opportunities, regardless of race. Meyer's investigative journalism showed the inequities of racial segregation in schools in the Washington metropolitan area. Nice copy of an uncommon item. [ DTM ].
