With Memoires Pour Servis Aux Essais de Michel Deigneur de Montagne bound to the rear of volume III, the second edition published in London by Guillaume in 1741. Errata to xviii of volume III. All three volume are written entirely in French. Collated, complete. Edited by, and with copious notes and details of the author by the French theologian, translator and writer Pierre Coste. The new edition of this early eighteenth century work. Michel de Montaigne was one of the most significant philosophers of the French Renaissance. His Essais were originally written between 1570 and 1592 and the first collection were published in 1580. In uniform calf bindings. Externally, worn. Severe loss to spines and extremities with heavy rubbing to boards and to the remainder of spines. All joints are tender. Both hinges to volume I are weak and may detach in postage. Front hinge to volume II is tender with cords showing with the rear hinge slightly strained but firm. Front hinge to volume III is tender with the rear hinge weak, may detach in postage. Large crack centrally down the spine of volume III. Prior owner's signature to the recto of front endpaper, S D Horton to C P Greenough. Another prior owner's signature to the verso of title page of all volumes. Title page to xxxii has separated from textblock. Binding to volume III is particularly weak between pages 264 and 265 where the binding has split and held by cords only. Otherwise, internally, generally firmly bound though strained in places. Pages are slightly age toned to edges with instances of scattered spots. Fair. book.
