Il articule le scepticisme à une nouvelle anthropologie et ouvre la voie à l'humanisme d'un Montaigne, en montrant que l'imagination est l'instrument de toutes les métamorphoses. Cet humanisme pluriel, qui valorise en l'homme la multiplicité des modes de pensée et de vie, présente aujourd'hui une alternative intéressante à l'humanisme monochrome des droits de l'homme qui prétend donner le ton de toutes les conduites humaines.
