Ajouter au panierHardback. Etat : New. In The New Black Vanguard: Photography between Art and Fashion, curator and critic Antwaun Sargent addresses a radical transformation taking place in fashion and art today. The featuring of the Black figure and Black runway and cover models in the media and art has been one marker of increasingly inclusive fashion and art communities. More critically, however, the contemporary visual vocabulary around beauty and the body has been reinfused with new vitality and substance thanks to an increase in powerful images authored by an international community of Black photographers. In a richly illustrated essay, Sargent opens up the conversation around the role of the Black body in the marketplace; the cross-pollination between art, fashion, and culture in constructing an image; and the institutional barriers that have historically been an impediment to Black photographers participating more fully in the fashion (and art) industries. Fifteen artist portfolios feature the brightest contemporary fashion photographers, including Tyler Mitchell, the first Black photographer hired to shoot a cover story for American Vogue; Campbell Addy, founder of the Nii Agency and journal; and Nadine Ijewere, whose early series title, The Misrepresentation of Representation, says it all. Alongside a series of conversations between generations, their images and stories chart the history of inclusion, and exclusion, in the creation of the commercial Black image, while simultaneously proposing a brilliantly reenvisioned future.

Ajouter au panierPaperback. Etat : new. Paperback. The definitive early career survey of one of the most compelling photographers of his generation.Tyler Mitchell's photography is animated by dreams of paradise and joy against the backdrop of history. Since his rise to prominence in the worlds of photography and fashion, Mitchell creates images of beauty, utopia, and the American landscape that expand the imaginary of Blackness in the twenty-first century. Wish This Was Real is the definitive early career survey of Mitchell's work, offering a comprehensive look into the subjects animating his artistic practice, from his color-drenched photography in Cuba and genre-bending portraits made in the United States, Europe, and West Africa to his photographs printed on diaphanous fabrics and sculptures that reference Black intellectual history. Presenting new perspectives on his long-standing themes of self-determination and the extraordinary radiance of the everyday, Wish This Was Real shows how portraiture can be rooted in a collective past while evoking imagined futures. Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Good. 1st Edition. A privately printed, limited edition of an 1883 volume that memorializes Daniel Tyler, a Civil War Union general who was also a founding figure in the history of Anniston, Alabama and the grandfather of First Lady of the United States Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt. This volume is inscribed by Edmund L Tyler, one of Gen. Tyler's sons, to Rev. Wallace Carnahan, the first rector of Grace Episcopal Church in Anniston. The book contains autobiographical writings by Tyler -- notably narrative focusing on his military career and his prominent role in the Civil War battle at Bull Run. (Edmund Tyler contributes additional notes about Gen. Tyler's military life.) The volume also includes correspondence written by Gen. Tyler and reminiscences about and tributes to Gen. Tyler. Tyler's importance to Anniston, Alabama history came through his ownership interest in the iron works and regional railroad that were central to the town's founding and development. Inscribed by Edmund L. Tyler on a front page to Wallace Carnahan. ("Rev. Wallace Carnahan with affectionate regards, Edmund L Tyler.") Brown cloth, 186 page. One of 200 copies printed. The covers have heavy rubbing and the original dye has largely dissipated giving the covers a mottled appearance. The interior pages are nice shape except for a dampstain on the bottom quarter of a group of eight pages. These pages include the title page and the frontspiece portrait. Photos available upon request. Signed by Author(s).
