Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. 1st Edition. Montesquieu. Montesquieu, Charles de Secondat. Oeuvres Posthumes de M. de Montesquieu. A Londres Et se trouve, a Paris, Chez de Bure fils aine, quai des Augustins, M. DCC. LXXXIII. First edition. 12mo, iv, 239 pages + errata. Contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt in 7 compartments, gilt edges of boards, all edges dyed red. Jjoints beginning to split, otherwise very good. Clear clean paper. "Édition Originale de ce recueil." Tchermerzine VIII, page 464. On the verso of the front board, pasted over what appears to be an importation sticker, is the armorial bookplate of a Roger Sherman. It is the Sherman coat of arms with Nil Sine Magno Vita Labore Dedit Mortalibus added at the top. The stamp, the plate, and the marbled verso and end-paper are all pristine. The signer of the Declaration of Independence, etc., and author of the Connecticut Compromise at the Constitutional Convention was a Roger Shermans who would have been interested in Montesquieu. I don t have carbon-dating equipment or any other way of telling whether this is the copy owned by THE Roger Sherman. I believe it is, but not to the degree that I would board an airplane whose safe arrival at my destination was contingent on the bookplate being the bookplate ot THE Roger Sherman. So, Caveat Emptor. My skepticism is strong enough to price this book much below what it would be worth if the bookplate were provably authentic. Faites vos joux.
