Printed by George Robertson, Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide, 1877. 9"x 6", 35pp. Original wrappers. GOOD copy, though not without its challenges. The rear wrapper is missing the tip of the back cover right bottom; there are creases in the bottom right corner from long ago; also there are Japan tissue taped short tears at middle top left margin of 5 leaves. Provenance: Library of Congress, with their mostly-faded rubber stamp on rear cover and also a half-faded rubber stamp on the title page. [++] "In 1857 Mueller (1825-1896) was appointed director of the botanical gardens at Melbourne, where he had built what is now the national herbarium. He continued to make numerous explorative trips throughout Australia. In 1858 the first volume of his Fragmenta Phytographiae Australiae, 12 vol. (185882), appeared. With the British botanist George Bentham he wrote a systematic monograph on the flora of Australia, Flora Australiensis: A Description of the Plants of the Australian Territory (186378). His most popular book was Select Plants Readily Eligible for Industrial Culture or Naturalization in Victoria (1876). In recognition of his outstanding contributions to botany, Mueller was elected to membership in the Royal Society of London at the age of 36. He was created a hereditary baron by the king of Württemberg in 1871, and he was knighted in 1879."--Britannica.

Modern cloth (lettered in gilt on the spine) retaining the original olive-green printed wrappers (a little unevenly discoloured, with minor restoration); minimal signs of age and use; a very good copy. Western Australian Parliamentary Paper Number 1 of 1880. 'Enumerative Notes of Plants collected during Mr. John Forrest's Trigonometrical Survey of Nickol Bay District during the year 1878' is the heading of the informative three-page introduction by von Mueller, dated Melbourne, December, 1878. A presentation copy, inscribed on the inside front wrapper 'To Sir Charles Nicholson, Bart, D.C.L., L.L.D, &c from the author'. Sir Charles Nicholson (1808-1903), 'statesman, landowner, businessman, connoisseur, scholar and physician . was an unusual combination of man of affairs and scholar. He led a very active social life but was deeply interested in the classics, history and education . By 1845 he had already begun to collect rare books, antiquities, pictures and manuscripts, and was regarded as one of the most cultivated men in the colony. In 1849-50 he joined Wentworth in pressing for the establishment of a university, and in December 1850 was nominated a member of the original senate of the University of Sydney. The Nicholson Museum in the University of Sydney, and the Nicholson pictures there . commemorate his name. He has aptly been described as Australia's first great collector, and he was also a generous patron of the arts and sciences' ('Australian Dictionary of Biography').

The first fascicle also contains a four-page introduction; the last one contains a general title page, dedication, retrospective remarks and assorted indices at the rear (in all, 14 leaves). A 'Directions for Binding' slip is tipped in at the title page of this fascicle. Original flush-cut quarter cloth and stiffened printed wrappers; slight loss to the cloth at the head of one decade and the foot of another; occasional light foxing and trifling signs of age and use internally; overall, a very presentable set, with a few cover blemishes as noted here. First Decade: front cover moderately marked, foxed and lightly chipped, with the top corner expertly stabilised. Third Decade: wrappers marked; rear one creased with minor loss to the bottom corner; one rear blank page slightly soiled. Fourth Decade: 'Croskell and Sons' on the front cover. The First Decade carries a presentation inscription 'To the Honorable David Wilkie, M.D., | a generous and enlightened | supporter of the author's researches'. David Elliot Wilkie (1815-1885), Scottish-born physician, 'arrived in Adelaide late in 1838 as surgeon-superintendent of the "Lloyds". Disappointed by the state of the colony, he moved to Melbourne in March 1839 . Soon successful, Wilkie specialized in diseases of women and children . He had been prominent in 1839 in founding the Melbourne Mechanics' Institute (from 1873 the Melbourne Athenaeum) of which he was treasurer in 1856-78. An inveterate collector and classifier of specimens of natural history, he and his friends Sir Ferdinand Mueller and John Macadam helped Andrew Clarke to form a national collection initially under the charge of the Philosophical Society of Victoria (1854). He was later a council member of the Philosophical Institute of Victoria (Royal Society from 1860), and was a leading executive member and treasurer of the Exploration Committee which sponsored the Burke and Wills expedition; with Mueller and Macadam he jointly published seven reports between 1857 and 1863' ('Australian Dictionary of Biography'). By including the valuable Report on the Forest Resources of Western Australia, by Baron Ferd. von Mueller, it will be brought more prominently before the public than it has hitherto been. the drawings give a very fair idea of the character of the Jarrah and Karri forests'.
