2003 N & M Press reprint (original pub1889). HB. viii + 408pp with ten illus and one map The expanded title of this book, as printed on the title page, is â A Narrative of the Peninsular Campaign 1807-1814, Its Battles and Sieges, Abridged from the History of the War in the Peninsular by Lieut-General Sir W.F.P.Napier, KCB.â This says it all. William Napier was the brother of the militarily more famous General Sir Charles, who made his reputation in India and is probably best known for his conquest of the province of Scinde. William, who like his brother did well in the Peninsular War, made his name as the author of the six-volume history War in the Peninsula and this is Dobsonâ s abridged version. As he says in the introduction it has been his aim to give an account of only the principal events of this long and bitterly fought campaign, paying tribute to Napierâ s â masterpiece of detailed military history.â .

2004 N & M Press reprint (original 1857). HB.361 pp +5 maps â Peccaviâ - the Latin for â I have sinnedâ - was the punning one-word telegram with which General Sir Charles Napier announced to the world his 1843 capture of Scinde (or Sind). Napier, a much wounded 61-year-old veteran of the Peninsula War, was placed in charge of the turbulent province, whose ruling Emirs, encouraged by British reverses in nearby Afghanistan, rose against Britainâ s power. Napierâ s forces routed the Emirs at the battles of Meanee and Hyderabad and the region became a key part of British India, making Napier into a popular Victorian hero. Unsurprisingly, Sir William Napier, the author of this work, is an uncritical admirer of his brother and fellow General, and is unsparing in his critique of those he perceives as Charles Napierâ s British enemies in the bureaucratic turf wars of the Raj. With 12 appendices and several endpaper maps.

Hardcover. Etat : Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Fine. 1st Edition. John Murray first started publishing Napier's mammoth history of the Peninsula War in 1828, this is a first impression of this new facsimile edition of 1993. Some very slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners very very slightly bruised, not price clipped (£22.50), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy. 622pp. An unabridged re issue of William Napier's magisterial classic eyewitness account. A prime source for the epic struggle between Britain and her allies against the French occupation of Spain and Portugal. Napier (1785-1860), a son of Lady Sarah Lennox and her second husband Col. George Napier, fought all through the Peninsula War campaign. He retreated with Moore to Corunna, made the forced march to Talavera, took part in the storming of Badajoz, commanded his regiment at Salamanca and was with the army at the battles of Orthes and Toulouse in France. After Waterloo Napier was with the Army of Occupation in France, returning in 1819, when he retired on half pay.

Etat : very good. Fourth edition. Hardcover book . Original brown cloth with gilt titles to spine and blind stamped decorations to front, back and spine ends, bound by Westley's of London xii, 437pp. Edited and with a preface (dated 1857) by W.F.P Napier after Sir Charles Napier's death. Charles Napier had been sent to India to command the British forces, and this text is a detailed attack on the way that India was ruled by the East India Company and Lord Dalhousie, with much on the discontent of the sepoys or native troops (which led to the mutiny in 1857). With no illustrations apart from a few tiny diagrams in text near end. Note that various books on the Mutiny and Indian history are available from David Ford Books, listed individually. Good condition overall . The contents are generally very good, with clean pages with browned closed edges and some small rucks/creases to fore-edges. The covers are mostly clean, with a few small marks, but spine cloth is split from spine all along back edge, and spine ends have some tears. Binding otherwise sound. Pictures available.
