Hardcover. 2nd edition. between A.D. 325, & A.D. 361. Second edition (Literally reprin ted from the first edition.) -- x, 230 p.; 23 cm. (Blehl A2b) At foot of last page, Burntisland: printed at the Pitsligo Press. -- Fron the printer's preface, by G. H. Forbes: `When in the autumn of 1852 I established a press in connection with my mission here, the difficulty which met me at the outset was to find employment for it. One of the first that occurred to me was the present treatise, which I had read several years before, with the deepest interest, but which had become so rare that for a considerable time I had endeavoured in vain to procure a copy. Soon after the printing began, it was taken up by the publisher whose name is on the title-page.' W. Perry's `George Hay Forbes : a romance in scholarship', 1927, gave some of the correspondence from William Froude, to whom Newman had conveyed the copyright, to Forbes, and spoke of this second edition `which probably numbered only a few hundred copies and is now rare.' (p. 59) -- Newman had found out in 1852 `that a most curious piracy of my `Arians' is discovered. The people bind it shabbily, introduce it into sales, and it sells at from 40/ to 50/ In consequence I shall (I suppose) re-print it at once, with all its imperfections on its head.' (Letters and diaries XV, p. 226); `I have discovered an infamous piracy of it selling for the genuine edition; and I am forced, if possible, to reprint it--to hinder a fraud.' (p. 312): but none of the faked copies is known to have survived. -- Newman let stand from 1833 two passages on `a corruption of Christianity' (p. 7) and on `the Papal Apostasy' (p. 226) which in the third edition of 1871 he relegated to the end of the Appendix. Fair ex-lib., upper spine chipped off. Pages brittle, some loose.
