Résumé : L'aspect le plus original des Mémoires de la baronne d'Oberkirch réside sans doute dans le tableau fidèle qu'elle nous donne d'abord de la vie au XVIIIe siècle dans une province française au statut très particulier : l'Alsace, son pays natal. Elle nous raconte avec fraîcheur et esprit ses séjours à Strasbourg - le Strasbourg de Goethe et du cardinal de Rohan -, et ses visites à la cour de Montbéliard où la princesse Dorothée de Wurtemberg était son " amie de c ur ". C'est pour retrouver celle-ci, devenue grande-duchesse de Russie et qui faisait en France un voyage semi-officiel avec son époux, que madame d'Oberkirch se rend pour la première fois à Paris, en 1782. Elle rédige alors son journal qui est la partie la plus célèbre des Mémoires. Tous les historiens des m urs avant la Révolution connaissent cette chronique savoureuse où défilent rois et princes, gens de lettres et magiciens, coiffeurs et modistes.
