Manuscrit / Papier ancien Signé
The O'Briens have separate entries in the Oxford DNB, and more information is to be gleaned from her eight volumes of reminiscences. The present item is from the collection of Irish nationalist autographs assembled by Miss Burgess of Norwich. William O'Brien writes in a close neat hand on a leaf of light-blue paper torn from an autograph album: 'For the Cause that lacks assistance! - / For the Wrong that needs resistance! - / For the Future in the distance, / And the Good that we can do! / William O'Brien / Old Head Lodge, Westfort / August 28th 1891'. (The poem is not original: the earliest printing discovered is from the Freemason's Quarterly, 1854.) Sophie O'Brien's contribution is on a 10 x 9.5 cm square of gilt-edged card, with rounded corners, loosely attached to the leaf with two mounts. It is a competent drawing of thistles and clover, in dark and light green, purple, pink and white, signed at bottom right 'S. O'Brien'. The recipient has written before the signature '(Mrs)'. See Image.
