First edition, first state. 131, [1] pp. Over 50 full-page drawings by Pyle, as well as decorative half-titles, head & tailpieces, etc. for a total of 95 images. 12mo, in 6s. 7-7/8" x 5" Original publisher's gray cloth stamped in silver [a distinctive Sarah Wyman Whitman design] with light wear to extremities, very clean copy with bright gilt stamping including the spine; silver top edge, also bright, green end papers, clean and unmarked ecept for a small ink dot on page 50. Title and frontispiece pages are fused at the gutter about 1/2 inch, that is, the pages don't open completely, as it appears glue was used, by a former owner or the bindery. First state first edition ("flashed" p.50:8, later changed to "clashed"). A very nice copy.

This book is in Very Good- condition and was issued without a dust jacket. Suede leather covers have Art Nouveau lettering and decorations to the front cover and spine. There is noticeable rubbing and edge wear to the spine ends and corners of the book covers. The lettering on the spine is a bit dulled and in some places rubbed away. The text pages are clean and bright. Illustrated throughout with black and white drawings by Howard Pyle. The front endpaper has some beginning color loss to the top edge and the front inner spine paper has begun to crack. There is a previous owner's book plate on the front pastedown page. This compilation also includes the companion poems: How the Old Horse Won the Bet, and, The Broomstick Train.
