Cloth Bound. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : No Jacket - as issued. 1st Edition. Very rare first edition of 1873, in the original binding of tan cloth with gilt title on the spine and gilt title plus gilt drawing of Vesuvius erupting on the front. 148 pages all checked and present. 8 plates present, including one folding, as called for, but there appears to be an original binder's error in that there is no plate VA but there are 2 copies of plate V11A. Text in very good, tight, clean condition, with only a little very light browning/foxing of the title page. The binding is in very good, tight condition, with slight fading in places. Mallet's important introduction, published here for the first time, occupies the first 78 pages. See photographs attached. (H131).

Cloth. Etat : Very Good. First English Edition. First English Edition. [4], [1]-148 pages + 8 plates (one folding). 8vo (9 7/8 x 6 1/2 inches). Publisher's original brick cloth with gilt decoration of Eruption of Vesuvius 1872 on front panel. "Palmieri, Vesuvius" in gilt on spine. This copy has been expertly recased with original spine laid down and endpapers renewed. Bright and clean internally, noting remnants of a few old (dealer?) prices and other notations at head of title page. Presents nicely. Cloth. Also known in blue cloth (no precedence that we are aware of). Translated from the original Italian (L'incendio vesuviano del di 26 aprile del 1872) by Robert Mallet. Professor Luigi wrote nine papers mentioning Vesuvius according to Mallet, who notes the primary value of this short account being Luigi's in person observations of the eruption and his use of what Mallet terms his seismograph (illustrated on the folding plate VIII): "The following Memoir of Signor Palmieri.brief as it is, embraces two distinct subjects, viz., his narrative as an eye-witness of the actual events of the eruption as they occurred upon the cone and slopes of the mountain, and his observations as to pulses emanating from its interior, as indicated by his Seismograp, and as to the electric conditions of the overhanging cloud of smoke (so called) and ashes, as indicated by his bifilar electrometer, both established at the Observatory. The narrative of the evefnts of the reuption is characterised by exactness of observation and a sobriety of language - so widely different from the exaggerated style of sensational writing that is found in almost all such accounts." (Introductory Sketch p 2) The Introductory sketch by Mallet is 78 pages long and is worthwhile, containing historical notes, and expert commentary on the state of knowledge at the time. Mallet, a geophysicist, studied earthquakes in some depth and published on the same. Wikipedia notes "On 9 February 1846 he presented to the Royal Irish Academy his paper, "On the Dynamics Of Earthquakes", which is considered to be one of the origins of modern seismology. He is also credited with inventing the word "seismology" and some related words, e.g. the isoseismal map, which he used for his research. He also invented the term epicentre." Another of his papers was "On the Objects, Construction, and Use of certain new Instruments for Self-registration of the Passage of Earthquake Shocks". Given his experience, Mallet was an excellent choice to translate and comment on this work by Palmieri.

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. 1st UK Edition. [.] with Notes, and an Introductory Sketch of the Present State of Knowledge of Terrestrial Vulcanicity, the Cosmical Nature and Relations of Volcanoes and Earthquakes. 8vo, hardback. pp. 148 + 14. Original text in Italian and written by Professor Luigi Palmieri, introduced and translated into English here by Robert Mallet. pp.1-79 comprises an 'Introductory Sketch' written by the translator, through which he introduces Palmieri's study and dwells on the art of translation. The translation of Palmieri's text begins on p. 81, with 'General Conclusions' beginning on p.135. Pages are numbered until p.148, after which there are 14 more pages exhibiting the book's 8 plates, with the final plate folding out over two pages. Each plate is in excellent condition with minimal signs of foxing. Complete with original binding and 8/8 original plates, although the spine has been re-backed, notable upon inspection. Copyright page contains a light stamp that demarcates the book as formerly property of The Institution of Civil Engineering, with the same stamp present on p.101 + 148. Inscription found at the top of the title page that reads 'Purchased 22nd January 1886', among other minor marks on the same page. Second front endpaper detached though still with the book. Light crease in top corner of pp.11-20. Slight black marks in top corner of p.143. Binding is in very good, sturdy condition, although a chip is missing from part of the original spine. There are also a few marks on the cover, but overall very good condition.

Livre Edition originale
Leather Bound. Etat : Very Good. First English Edition. London: Asher & Co., 1873. First Edition in English. Introductory sketch by Robert Mallet. Illustrated with 8 wood-engraved plates, one of them folding. 9 1/4" x 5 3/4", [4], 148. Three-quarter calf and marbled boards, spine decorated in gilt, raised bands, red morocco labels, marbled endpapers, marbled page edges. Blindstamp of the Massachusetts State Library at title page, spine number inked in white. Rear cover loosened. Rubbing to covers with some extremity wear, still very good. Contents near fine, with no sign of foxing. More than half of the text - 78 pages - is taken by Mallet's intriguing introductory skecth, in which he recounts the state of science as it was at the time with regard to vulcanism and seismlogy. Palmieri's ensuing account is of the events of the 1872 Mount Vesuvius eruption, and is itself presented in a very scholarly fashion; the two were leading scientists of the era in the subject. The folding engraving is of Palmieri's ""sismografo elettro-magnetico", a Rube-Godlberg looking contraption which was of more than a little interest at the time; not correctly a seismograph in the modern sense [it did not inscribe inked graphs], it was rather a series of instruments intended to give the direction, intensity, and duration of an earthquake, and respond to both horizontal and vertical motions. The plates, as are all of the contents, are near fine. Extraordinarily rare. l92.
