Paperback. Etat : Very Good. (New York Review Books Classics). A bone-chilling tale of crime and punishment with the dark beauty of a backwoods ballad. Set on the dirt-poor Aegean island of Sklathos, it is the story of Hadoula, an old woman living on the margins of society and at the outer limits of respectability. She knows about herbs and their hidden properties, and women come to her when they need help. She knows womenâ s secrets and she knows the misery of their lives, and as the book begins, she is trying to stop her newborn granddaughter from crying so that her daughter can at last get a little sleep. The terrible truth hits her: thereâ s nothing worse than being born a woman, and thereâ s something that she, Hadoula, can do about that. 127p.

Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Near Fine. 1st Edition. First English Edition (NAP). Both the book and the dust jacket are in excellent condition. Take a look at the photographs. The black covers of the book have very little wear, a little crinkling at the spine ends, a tiny dent on the front. The page edges absolutely clean. The interior of the book looks, dare I say, perfect. The pages are all very clean. I went through them and didn't see any soiling at all. They are in excellent condition. I didn't see any creasing or dogeared corners. No issues of any kind. There aren't any markings. No attachments. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. I've had the dust jacket in a fitted protective cover as long as I've owned the book. The jacket is not clipped. The flaps are in very good condition. I really don't see much in the way of wear on the jacket, maybe a little toning at the margins, not much. There's a tiny bit of crinkling at the spine ends. That's pretty much it. From the front dust jacket flap: Written in 1903, The Murderess is a classic of modern Greek literature, a popular tragedy, audacious in conception and subtle in execution. It's heroine, ferocious in her womanhood, is reminiscent of Antigone and Hecuba , confronts 'woman's fate' with her own violent final solution.
