An anthology of medical verse --- a beautiful book. Green cloth-covered boards, gilt spine and front board lettering (bright), gilt and white front board decoration in excellent condition, 9 3/4 x 6 3/4 inches, top edge gilt, 288 pp., all 5 plates with tissue guards present. Very good plus - near fine. Includes verse by Elizabeth B. Browning, Lord Byron, Geoffrey Chaucer, Dr. John Cheyne (as in Cheyne-Stokes respiration), Emily Dickinson, Eugene Field, Dr. Oliver W. Holmes (entitled "Rip Van Winkle, M.D."), Ben Jonson, Dr. S. Weir Mitchell, James Whitcomb Riley, Walt Whitman and John Greenleaf Whittier. An example of the humor in this book: "On Dr. Cheyne, the Vegetarian" by Dr. Andrew Wynter, and "To Dr. Wynter" by Dr. John Cheyne. "On Dr. Cheyne, the Vegetarian": "Tell me from whom, fat-headed Scot, / Thou didst thy system learn; / From Hippocrates thou hadst it not, / Nor Celsus, nor Pitcairn. / Suppose we own that milk is good, / And say the same of grass; / The one for babes is only food, / The other for an ass. / Doctor! our new prescription try / (A friend's advice forgive); Eat grass, reduce thyself, and die;--- / Thy patients then may live." "To Dr. Wynter": "My system, Doctor, is my own, / No tutor I pretend;--- / My blunders hurt myself alone, / But yours your dearest friend. / Were you to milk and straw confined, / Thrice happy might you be; / Perhaps you might regain your mind, / And from your wit get free. / I can't your kind prescription try, / But heartily forgive; / 'Tis nat'ral you should bid me die, / That you yourself may live."
