Millar., 1760. FIRST EDITION. 8vo (in 4s), pp. [ii], 47 [48 blank]. 4 sermons bound in contemporary quarter calf, marbled boards (very worn), with joints cracked and tender and front cover almost detached). A nonce volume of four sermons, with the one on education by Furneaux being probably of more interest in this secular and profane age. Furneaux (1726 - 1783), an independent minister, was a staunch advocate of the rights of non-conformists and active in the Coward Trust for improving academic education. He also edited, but never published, some of Chandler's works. None of the sermons can be said to be truly rare, but they are uncommon: ESTC locates 15 of the first item; 10 (3 only in North America) of the second; 14 (3 in North America) of the third; and 19 of Chandler's sermon.

No Binding. Etat : Very Good. Clapham, 1 May 1773. Autograph letter signed. 4to (15 x 23cm) [2] pages penned on bifolium, manuscript address panel to verso, two tears from seal opening (resulting in loss of one word but sense recoverable), small marginal tear to margin of first page (not touching text), old folds, very good. A rare autograph letter penned by the prominent dissenting minister Philip Furneaux (1726-1783), written from Clapham 1 May 1773 during the year of publication of the work for which he is best known: An essay on toleration: With a particular View to the late application of the Protestant dissenting ministers to Parliament, for amending, and rendering affectual, the act of the first of William and Mary, commonly called the Act of toleration (London, 1773). The letter concerns exactly this subject the rights of nonconformists, of which Furneaux was a leading champion. Writing to Samuel Windeatt Junr. in Totnes Furneaux offers advice on a threatened prosecution of Mr. [Henry] Baynham , pastor of a dissenting congregation in Totnes: I had rather if such a step should be taken, that it had proceeded from some bigot of the establishment than from any who call themselves Dissenters. Pray give my very sincere respects to Mr. Baynham, and exhort him neither to court not to fear such an event. A prosecution that is real, and not courted or procured, from whatever quarter it comes, would, I make no doubt, be the occasion of passing a very important Bill, and indeed it is the general opinion, that it will succeed on a future occasion, though to be under the execution of the penal laws would render that success more sure and speedy . Mention is made also of plans for a visit to Devon and some family matters.

Edition originale Signé
First edition under this title, and the third American edition overall. [4], iv, [5]-119, [1], xii, 155, [1,ads] pp. 1 vols. 8vo. SIGNER JOSHUA BABCOCK'S COPY. This work originally appeared in 1772 as a fifth volume to Bell's edition of Blackstone, under the title An Interesting Appendix to Sir William Blackstone's Commentaries on the Laws of England. Bell printed another edition in 1773, and this edition with the title by which the work is now generally known. The work attempts to codify personal rights and establish a definitive legal relationship between the citizen and government. It was the standard pre-Revolutionary work on the subject, and includes the exchanges between Blackstone and Joseph Priestley and Philip Furneaux. The latter two were eager to engage Blackstone on the topics of religious liberty, tolerance and nonconformists. In a wide-ranging, though uniformly eminent, career Joshua Babcock (1707-1783) was variously a physician, a Supreme Court Justice in Rhode Island and a major-general in the state militia during the Revolutionary war. He sat on the War Council and hosted George Washington in 1776. Furthermore, Babcock was a friend of Benjamin Franklin, and a signatory of Rhode Island's Declaration of Independence which preceded the national declaration by two months. A title such as this was an obvious inclusion to a Supreme Court Justice's library and there are ms. annotations (in Furneaux's reply) that attest to Babcock having consulted the work frequently. This copy later was part of the New York Bar Association's collection. Cohen, 3551 & 5370; ESTC W19238; Evans, 13154 (incorrectly dating it 1774); Eller, William Blackstone Collection in the Yale Law Library, 257; Sabin, 5697; Modern red buckram, spine gilt with title and shelf numbers, closed tear repaired and ex-lib stamp to title page, text lightly foxed throughout, one gathering poorly opened, contemporary annotations in one or more hands, signed by Babcock in two places [4], iv, [5]-119, [1], xii, 155, [1,ads] pp. 1 vols. 8vo First edition under this title, and the third American edition overall.
