24 plates. Striking pictoral card covers with cord tie, 27x37. Cover faintly grubby but still nice and bright with good plates. Lovely detailed large format photos, tissue-guarded, mostly of pavilions with architects named. Outstanding item.

7. Paris, au Bureau du Journal Amusant, 20 rue Bergère, 1861- 1862 , in-4°, 303 x 212 mm, vol. I bound in contemporary red half roan (binding slightly used). Vol. II bound in contemporary black cloth with smooth spine. Vol. I has 52 issues consisting each of 2 pp of text (biography) and a full page portrait printed on recto side only, with (4) pp preliminary pages (title) and 2 index leaves at the end. Vol. II has 40 issues (numbered 53 ->92) . Complete set of 92 issues of this portrait series published as a supplement to the weekly magazine '' Le Journal Amusant''. It is one of the earliest examples of the use of photography in periodical publishing. It contains in all 92 full page portraits of famous European figures rendered in lithography and based upon a photograph (some of the portrait reproductions are signed in the plate '' Gillot''). The name of the photographer is each time mentioned in the caption underneath. Some of the subject figures ; Lamartine, Alexandre Dumas, Rossini , Offenbach , Richard Wagner , Pope Pius IX , Cavour , King Victor-Emmanuel , Théophile Gautier , Corot , Doré , Meisonnier , Lord Palmerston , Garibaldi , Courbet, de Lesseps , Meyerbeer , Nadar , .( history of photography , portrait photography , photography reproduction).
