Art / Affiche / Gravure
No Binding. Etat : Near Fine. 12,1×43,5 cm [full spread]. Threefold. Invite / programme for a week of one-day events, screenings and exhibitions (!) before the gallery moved to a new location. Participating artists were Joseph Beys w. Bjørn Nørgaard, John Latham, Konrad Lueg, Heinz Mack, Otto Piene, Sigmar Polke and Gerhard Richter. A few pivotal projects were introduced including Beuys Manresa and most significantly Volker Bradke which is Richter s first and only film-work screened at the eponymous exhibition. Original design. Very rare document. Gerhard Richter s Volker Bradke exhibition took place on 13th December 1966. On a floral wallpaper installed by Konrad Lueg, Richter displayed not only the painting but also around 30 photographs, a banner and a film, all focusing on Volker Bradke. The principle of blurring executed here by Richter in his characteristic manner is apparent in the blurred photographs and is also transferred into the medium of film. For Gerhard Richter and his artist friends, Volker Bradke embodied the conformist man in the street, who the artist lifts out of normality by representing him in a large-scale oil painting, in accordance with the ideas of Pop Art. In the exhibition this approach is raised to the level of the staging of a personality cult: paintings, photographs, banner and film are dedicated to one person. However, in this case this staged cult does not refer to any famous person, but to the unknown Volker Bradke. Gerhard Richter challenges the meaning of the adoration of such so-called icons and unmasks the superficiality of celebrity culture. [gerhard-richter website] // Near Fine.

When unfolded, one side of the poster/catalogue is a large silkscreen reproduction of Peter Dibke's now famous image of the Düsseldorf group participants, standing together in a field: Joseph Beuys, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, Klaus Rinke, Blinky Palermo, Jörg Immendorf, Imi Knoebel, Reiner Ruthenbeck, Claus Böhmler and Rainer Giese (Chris Reinecke is not represented in the picture but is in the catalogue). The other side of the poster is printed with texts, and documents the work of the artists with bio-bibliographical details and illustrations of the works. A text by Jean-Christoph Ammann explains the context of the exhibition and the importance of the Düsseldorf academy and art scene at the time. Catalogue in the form of a folded poster. (Poster folded four times as issued).

Art / Affiche / Gravure
No Binding. Etat : Near Fine. 127×90,4 cm. Impressive XL poster published in conjunction with a key exhibition of the Düsseldorf Scene artists. Features recto a group photo of the participating artists, namely Joseph Beuys, Claus Böhmler, Rainer (Imi)* Giese, Jörg Immendorff, (Klaus Wolf ) Imi* Knoebel, Blinky Palermo, Sigmar Polke, Chris Reinecke, Gerhard Richter, Klaus Rinke, Reiner Ruthenbeck, Günter Weseler. Photo by Peter Dibke. Verso is blank, this one being the even rarer variant of the piece, published as a standalone poster and not the more commonly seen poster/catalogue with information printed on the back. [Ref: see TATE, AR00861 for the more common poster/catalogue version] * I was studying at a very boring, Bauhaus-inspired school of applied arts in Darmstadt and wanted to get away, he says. Luckily, I had a great friend and collaborator in Imi Giese (1942 1974). (Their shared first names derived from their habitual greeting, Ich mit ihm, or I with him. ) Together, we discovered a host of things that inspired us. One was the music of free-jazz musician and composer Ornette Coleman. We would follow him on tour. Another was the art of Kazimir Malevich and his Suprematist movement. Both seemed radical and extreme. Discoveries like these pointed to a way out of their conventional paths for the young artists. [Knoebel to Kamps, 2020] // Previously carefully folded.
