Édition originale des mémoires posthumes de Phélypeaux, négociateur de la paix de Loudun entre la régente et les princes rebelles. Paul Phélyppeaux de Pontchartrain compta parmi les ministres les plus efficaces de la régente Marie de Médicis. La paix de Loudun, qu'il négocie en 1616, permet à cette dernière de prendre Condé au piège de son propre orgueil: son entrée au Conseil royal, conséquence du traité, sert en fait de prologue à son arrestation. Les mémoires de Phélyppeaux éclairent donc une période cruciale, qui voit en outre l'ascension de Richelieu -chargé des Affaires étrangères justement en 1616- et précède de peu l'assassinat de Concini par lequel le jeune LouisXIII rejettera la tutelle de sa mère.
