Smith. Original maroon cloth with gilt titled spine, in custom made slipcase with gilt titled label. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Cloth covers lightly rubbed and worn; spine neatly repaired. Custom slipcase is in near fine condition with minor shelf soiling. With clear, mylar wrapper. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: The author, Henry R. Pyne, a man of humor and perception, without bias or bigotry, served with the New Jersey Cavalry as chaplain from 1861 to 1864. The regiment, first known as Halsted's Horse fought with the Army of Virginia and the Army of the Potomac. They are honored by a monument at Gettysburg. Pyne writes of sweating soldiers and tired horses, farm housewives, prisoners, flirtatious girls, and the "Incredible General Pope" and "Joe Hooker. Some of the horrors of war, never over-played, are also included. Very good descriptions of mud and rain, foundering supply wagon, the drama and terror of a cavalry rout, the "wearisome" night marches. Both exciting and matter-of-fact, this record of life in a Civil War cavalry regiment has an enduring historical appeal. The 1st New Jersey Cavalry is one of the FOX 300 Fighting Regiments. Charles P. Smith, to whom the author prints a presentation letter (pg.11), has pencilled a separate inscription to H. J. Bennett. Smith was a New Jersey politician during the war. REFERENCES: DORN NJ# 4; NEVINS I pg. 149 More the chaplain s wartime autobiography than a regimental history; the narrative is both vivid and humorous, and treats largely of campaigning against Mosby. ; FOX 300 pg 242: "Of the 272 cavalry regiments in the Union Army, the First New Jersey stands sixth in point of losses in action.(commanded by) Percy Wyndham, an officer of the Italian army who had seen service in Europe. The regiment took the field early in 1862, entering upon a series of arduous and perilous campaigns which ended only with the war.".
