White tissue dust jacket/NF w/trace surface wear to back. 15th century Hispano-Flemish altarpieces & other religious works of Fernando Gallego (c. 1440 - 1507). Combining artistic traditions of his native Spain w/those of Netherlandish painters as of Rogier van der Weyden & Dieric Bouts, Gallego produced what we admire as the Hispano-Flemish style. Likely born in Salamanca, Spain, Gallego worked throughout Castile & Extremadura, notably in Ciudad Rodrigo, Plasencia, Toro, and Zamora. This catalog of b/w plates of "The Retablo of the Cathedral of Cuidad Rodrigo" were gifted 1954 to the Univ of Arizona Musuem of Art by Samuel H. Kress which once adorned a church in Spain depicting the life of Jesus & illuminating the Gospels.

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Fernando Gallego (1440 - 1507) was a Spanish painter whose art took much from the Flemish style predominate at that time. He can be considered as painting in a Hispano-Flemish style. This book, "Fernando Gallego and the Retablo of Ciudad Rodrigo" was written by Robert M. Quinn and published by the University of Arizona Press in 1961. The text is accompanied by a Spanish translation by Renato Rosaldo. There is one magnificent full-page color plate (the frontispiece) and numerous full-page monochrome plates. As well there are vignette close-ups through the text presenting details of various pieces. ******************************************* The Retablo of Ciudad Rodrigo depicts in numerous paintings the life of Christ, as well as various other symbolic episodes from the Bible. The entire work is a remarkably beautiful tableau. Mr. Quinn places Gallego within the proper artistic and historical milieu, and analyses each painting within the tableau, explaining the symbolism contained in each picture. The book is a fascinating and beautiful scholarly work examining an artistic masterpiece by an artist who is, possibly, not known to a majority of modern Americans. This is the First Edition and has a signed inscription in ink by the author on the title page. ******************************************* TITLE : Fernando Gallego and the Retablo of Ciudad Rodrego / AUTHOR : Robert M.
