Smyth sewing is a method of book binding where groups of folded pages (referred to as signatures) are stitched together using binder thread. Each folded signature is sewn together individually with multiple stitches and then joined with other signatures to create the complete book block. This is the traditional and best method of bookbinding.

Etat : see description. large heavy 8vo, xxvi,515pp, with running footnotes, ten maps, one large folding showing where the Romans mined for coal, copper, gold. lead, tin and iron, about seven pages with the odd word in margin or some underlining but in light pencil not interfering with text, original cloth rubbed and nicked top and bottom of spine and lightly on corners, title and Oxford arms gilt on spine, a 'withdrawn from Library' rubber stamp on imprint page, brown marks inside both boards where, most likely, a dustwarpper was held in place by sticky tape, a good working copy.
