Newton, estas memorias son una crónica de la lucha en el Este desde Barbarroja hasta la primavera de 1945. Incluyen un minucioso examen del avance de la 6º División Panzer sobre Leningrado, las experiencias de la contraofensiva de invierno soviética en torno a Moscú, el fracasado intento de socorrer Stalingrado, la Batalla de Kursk, la Operación Rumyanstsev, la retirada hacia el río Dnieper, la batalla de Kiev y las desesperadas batallas libradas en territorio alemán al final de la guerra. Erhard Raus nació el 8 de enero de 1889 en Wolframitz, Moravia. En 1905 ingresó en la Escuela de Cadetes de Infantería del Ejército Austrohúngaro y en 1912 recibió su despacho de 2º teniente. Durante la 1º Guerra Mundial luchó en el frente italo-austriaco, y fue ascendido a capitán en 1918, año en que contrajo matrimonio con Anna Morsani. Tras el fin de la guerra continuó en el ejército. Con el Anschluss de 1938 ingresó en la Werhmacht con el grado de coronel. En julio de 1940 mandaba un regimiento motorizado y en septiembre de 1941, siendo ya general, asumió el mando de la 6º División Panzer. En mayo de 1943 ascendió a general de tropas panzer y recibió el mando del XI Cuerpo. En agosto recibió la Cruz de Caballero. Posteriormente asumiría el mando sucesivamente del XLVII Cuerpo Panzer, de los 4º y 1º Ejércitos Panzer y del Grupo de Ejércitos Raus. Fue enviado a la reserva en marzo de 1945. Murió en 1956.
