Juli 1738 in Boston; gestorben am 9. September 1815 in London) war ein amerikanisch-englischer Maler. Copley besuchte von 1774 bis 1776 Italien, wurde 1779 Mitglied der königlichen Akademie in London und starb 1815. Seine hervorragendsten Werke sind: der Tod Chathams, der Tod des Majors Pierson, König Karl I. im Parlament; ein großes See- und Schlachtenbild, den Moment darstellend, wo der holländische Admiral de Winter seinen Degen an Duncan übergibt, reich an Porträten; die Familie des Königs Georg III., die Schlacht von Trafalgar u. a. V. Green, W. Humfred, Dunkarton, Piquenot u. a. haben nach ihm gestochen. Copley starb am 9. September 1815 in London. Sein Sohn ist der bekannte Lordkanzler John Singleton Copley, 1.
