He is best known for his book The Red Vineyard (1928), which gives an account of his service during the First World War as a military chaplain. Murdoch enlisted and trained with the 132nd CEF Battalion (North Shore), and eventually served in England, France, Belgium and Germany. The much revered priest suffered from Post Tramatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or Shell Shock as it was called at the time. As a result of his illness he lived almost half his life in seclusion in Bartibog, New Brunswick . A casuality of war -his illness misunderstood.

The story of a Catholic Chaplin in the Great War who carried God s words and Sacrament to soldiers in the front lines, hospitals, and wherever needed. Born in 1885 in Chatham, New Brunswick, Benedict Joseph Murdoch served as a Parish Priest in Douglastown and Jacquet River and also as a Chaplin to the 132nd North Shore Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Forces. Pages yellowed, page 11 has a previous owner s signature, also the inside of the back cover. Two cataloguing numbers on spine. Black stain on upper left-hand corner of cover. First two pages loose. Book: Fair.
