First impression of the second edition - published in 1888, the first edition being in 1884. ***Four black and white steel-engraved illustrations, including a frontispiece showing a portrait of Richard Wagner: 'Last Portrait'; facsimile of Garibaldi's Handwriting; Cremona Violins; Violin Shapes and Bows. ***Good in navy blue cloth-covered boards with gilt titles and gilt musical decoration to spine and front board. Grey front and rear free endpapers and pastedowns. Contemporaneous black and white steel-engraved ex-libris illustrated armorial bookplate printed 'Ex-Libris Albert Cohn' to front pastedown, showing books, paper scroll and flowers in a vase around armorial shield. 'A. M. Cohn' stamped to top of front free endpaper. Small scuff to bottom of front paste-down where an old label has been removed. ***'Valuable for its plates of old violins information' written in pencil to recto (reverse) of front free endpaper. ***Edges of boards rubbed. Corners of boards rubbed and bumped. Small splits to head and tail of spine. Front hinge weak.     Hardcover. Etat : Good. No Jacket. M. E. Haweis (illustrateur). In a blue cloth hardcover with gilt titles and illustrations to spine and front. No dust jacket. Brown end papers. 335 pp., gilt edged, extensively illustrated in black and white. The book is in good condition. There is moderate shelf-wear to the extremities of the cover, especially the head and tail of the spine which is also sunned. There is a rectangular mark to the back board. The hinges are cracked and the binding slack. There is a dedication dated 1877 to the reverse of the ffep. The ffep and half title are becoming detached and the bottom corner of the ffep is creased. There is moderate foxing to the reverses of the feps and adjacent pages. There is a small mark to the first page of text, otherwise the pages are clean and unmarked.
