Decorated Boards. Etat : Rough. No Jacket. The text is clean and the binding remains strong. The pages appear to have experienced a bit of damage due to exposure to moisture as they are warped. They also exhibit heavy foxing. The cover has been covered with marbled paper; the edges are well worn. This book also has a strong musty smell. Size: 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.

Pages have some discoloration due to age. Has former owners name in front. A religious story (most likely fictionalized) of George Lewis and Ellen Willis and how we are to learn to be content in our situation in life. The author Daniel Parish Kidder (October 18, 1815 July 29, 1891) was an American Methodist Episcopal theologian and writer who spent several years in Brazil. Kidder was born in 1815 at Darien, Genesee County, Co., N.Y. He graduated from Wesleyan University in 1836, entered the ministry, and in 1837 went to Brazil to work as a missionary on the Northeast and the Amazon. After his return to the United States in 1840, he served as a corresponding secretary of the Methodist Sunday School Union and editor of Sunday-school publications and tracts (184456), as professor of homiletics in Garrett Biblical Institute for 15 years and in Drew Theological Seminary for 10 years, and as secretary of the board of education of his church (188087). The rest of his life was spent in Evanston, Illinois. Scarce.

Might be classed 3/4 leather but amount of leather is small. Gold colored print on spine. Spine hasa 5/8" long piece missing in the middle of the spine length. Also has B 198 gold stamped on spine. Chipping around all three paper edges. Plain endpapers. Flyleaf has ink note for " Perkinsville Sunday school Library ." Brownish stain on fly that bleeds throught to back of frontspiece.Occassional stains and spots but actually sound and unmarked . "Which is the Hero", title piece, is a very short ( 20 page) morality piece. "Old Narquois . " is the bulk of the text (40 pagers). Entire book is 60 pages. Religious. Found no match in this format.

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. First edition thus. 12mo in pebbled brown cloth, spine stamped in gilt. 222 pp. With 39 illustrations in the text. The first edition thus, title page states "Part I" but this volume all issued of this version of the work. Kidder has revised Dick's earlier, more extensive book, omitting the parts dealing with religious and philosphical issues and retaing only the scientific and astromonical parts. Very good, cloth evenly faded and spine lettering somewhat rubbed.

Hardcover. Etat : Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Note Well: this is the original 1854 publication. 16mo (six inches tall). The blind-stamped cloth binding shows light wear to the extremities. The pages are tight and clean with no marks (some light foxing here and there). Name in pencil inside the front cover. As a bookseller's aside: this appears to be an American attempt to mimic Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress.

Parts I and II are the Ninth Edition, Revised (Twelve Thousand and Fourteenth Thousand), while Part III is the Third Edition (Fourth Thousand). All hinges are holding but there is a paper crack in the front hinge of Part II. While not bright white, the contents of all three Parts (966 pp., 628 illus.; 909 pp, 830 illus.; 292 pp., 306 illus.) otherwise appear mark-free, fully legible, complete, and securely bound. Dust stained top edge, Parts I and II have a bit of dust staining on the pages' bottom edge at the fore edge as a result of shelf fatigue (as is common in books of this thickness and weight). Uniform pebbled brown cloth with gilt spine lettering and blind-stamped top and bottom border lines on the spine and the boards. Lightly bumped and rubbed in the corners and in the spine's head and tail edges. Patches of light rubbing to some edges. The spines of Part I and III are a bit cocked. No ex-library markings. **Significant extra charges to cover postage costs will apply to an order requesting expedited and/or international shipping because of the weight of this three-book set.
