The evolution of the poster is traced from uncertain beginnings in the early eighteenth century, through a heyday in the early 1900s and the 'Indian summer' of the twenties and thirties, to the television-dominated post-war era. Throughout, the stress is on the poster's practical role as a persuader: intrusive, beguiling, insufferable, appealing-and sometimes beautiful-Maurice Rickards believes that the poster is being superseded by other media and points to changes that currently affect its standards-the emergence of the non-poster, the pop poster and the 'hang-up'.
