Hard Cover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. First Edition. Dust Jacket Slightly rubbed, unclipped. Green cloth with bright gilt titling. Previous owner's inscription on ffep. Light foxing to page tips. 238 pages text clean, binding tight. This highly readable book is the first to trace the evolution of farming in Western Europe from prehistoric times to the scientific and economic complexities of the present day; it is also the first to relate the island agriculture of Britain to Continental developments. Set against the background of the rural scene and country people, their customs and pursuits, it shows the effects in every age of soil, climate and events on man's efforts through history to sustain life from the land. The Roman method of rural organisation forms a prelude to an account of the'Manorial System' with open field farming in the hands of great ecclesiastics and laymen. After the recession of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries came a general renaissance in agriculture: farming for the production of food stimulated by an increase in the circulation of money, and the establishment of a rural squirearchy; the widespread reclamation of land; rural rebuilding; and the beginnings of a popular agricultural and rural literature. In the hundred years between the mid-eighteenth and mid-nineteenth centuries, soaring populations, industry and prices resulted in an agricultural revolution in Europe. Now came new crops, new stock and the early days of farm mechanisation. Finally, the story is brought up to date, covering the period from the 1870's, when New World food imports began to flood Europe, through two World Wars, to the Common Market. Mr Trow-Smith is not only an expert in his subject, well known as the author of several books including English Husbandry and the standard History ofBritish Husbandry, but he is also a farmer himself with the advantage of being able to relate past practices to modern techniques. His writing and asides, lively, informed and amusing, make this book a fascinating and enjoyable contribution to an important aspect of European history. Size: 8vo.
