Diego Rodríguez de Almela, sabemos que vivió entre c.1426 y 1489, llegando a ser considerado uno de los hombres más eruditos de su tiempo. Ordenado sacerdote en 1451, fue arcipreste de Val de Santibáñez y canónigo en Cartagena. Discípulo del obispo Alfonso de Cartagena y capellán de Isabel la Católica durante las campañas de Granada de 1491, compuso su Valerio tomando como modelo la obra del célebre escritor romano Valerio Máximo, Hechos y dichos memorables (primer tercio del siglo I d.C.), compuesta por nueve libros dedicados a enaltecer las virtudes romanas mediante relatos tradicionales o escritos extraídos de obras de filósofos e historiadores griegos y latinos.Entre otras obras de este autor citamos las siguientes: Compilación de los milagros de Santiago, Compendio historial de las Crónicas de España (1462), Tratado de la Guerra (1482) y Batallas campales (1487).La primera edición de este libro se publicó en Murcia en 1487 por Lope de la Roca; tras la edición de Medina del Campo (1511), se publica en Valladolid (1512), Toledo (1520, 1541), Sevilla (1527, 1536, 1542 y 1551), Madrid (1568) y Salamanca (1587). Precisamente desde la primera edición de Toledo de 1520, se comete el error de atribuir esta obra a Fernán Pérez de Guzmán y su nombre será el que aparezca como autor en las ediciones citadas.
