8vo; original brown cloth, lettered in black on spine and upper cover; pp. (ii) + xxxiii + (ix) + 232; folding map; plates; tables. Cloth slightly rubbed; earlier owner's ink stamp to front pastedown, and name signed on front free endpaper; a few fox spots to endpapers and edges. Good to very good condition. Afrikaans text. Uncommon. (Nienaber I, p. 33) 'Die Armblanke en die Maatskappy' is by J. R. Albertyn, and 'Die Moeder en die Dogter van die Arm Gesin' is by M. E. Rothmann. The first Carnegie Commission, through grants from the Carnegie Corporation, the Union government and the Dutch Reformed Church, explored the 'poor white' problem between 1928 and 1932. Among the five commissioners appointed were the Dutch Reformed minister Johannes Albertyn of Kimberley, and the Afrikaans author Maria Rothmann, also known as M.E.R. Albertyn and Maria Rothmann were responsible for this, the final volume of the 5-volume report.
