Soft cover. Etat : Good. No Jacket. Cond.: G. Rare, collectible Edition, this is the 1st Printing of the vintage 1950 Penguin SoftCover UK Edition thus, translated, with introduction, by J. M. Cohen. In remarkable condition for its age, Book is fragile (requiring soft handling), mildly and uniformly age toned and, except for light bumping to text block corners that results in page creasing, and what appears to be burn marks (small one at fore edge affecting ffep and more significant one affecting Cover top front joint and text pages through p172), is otherwise free of markings and other blemishes. Cover is separating from binding, has overall light soiling, is moderately age toned, and shows rubbing and chipping along hinges, edges, head, tail, corners and joints, with still-legible and crisply distinct lettering, design and artwork. Don Quixote is a Spanish epic novel by Miguel de Cervantes. Originally published in two parts, in 1605 and 1615, its full title is The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha. A founding work of Western literature, it is often labeled as the first modern novel and one of the greatest ever written. Don Quixote is also one of the most-translated books in the world. This Penguin Classic edition (L10) was a new translation by J. M. Cohen. J. M. (John Michael) Cohen (5 February 1903 ? 19 July 1989) was a prolific translator of European literature into English. In 1946, on the strength of a commission from Penguin Books for a major translation of Don Quixote, Cohen quit his teaching job to dedicate himself full-time to writing and translation. His workmanlike and accurate translation of Don Quixote, published in 1950, has been highly praised, and remained in print until 2000. Ref T 4.
