Athanaeum, Kobenhavn, 1942 first ed. 237 pages. b/w 7 woodcuts. One of 100 copies (This being no. 59) specially bound in half leather with decorated paper covers to include an original signed etching by Axel Salto. The etching is bound in as the frontispiece. Additionally signed by Salto on the limitation page. In Danish. The binding is in about fine condition. Gilt titles to spine. The leather has variations of colour giving a slightly sprinkled effect. A very nice book in the hand and to the eye. Salto [1889-1961] was known primarily as a ceramicist. The Golden Ass is the only Latin novel from Ancient Rome to have survived. It's episodic, picaresque form following the adventures of the hapless, Lucius as he is transformed by a misfiring spell into a mule, a change which gives him insight into the conditions of the lower classes. The book's influence on Western literature has been profound and one can see echoes of it in Cervantes, Shakespeare and Chaucer.
