Extremities of backstrip are bumped and rubbed, front cover pastedown illustrated by Jessie Willcox Smith is rubbed around the frame with two minor scratches and slight rubbing but is still quite attractive. The illustrated endpapers and pages are clean, binding is tight, book has obviously been seldom read. The List of Illustrations page has a hole in the upper margin, approximately 1/4-inch by 1-inch. . The text gives excerps of the relevant Dickens works, 24 chapters in all. The ten plates are all present. Wonderful full color illustrations of the children of Dickens: Tiny Tim, Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, and many others. An attractive, well-preserved copy of the first edition. . 8vo - 8" to 9" tall. 259 pages. E1.

The text pages are clean and bright. Included are ten full color, full sized plates by Jessie Willcox Smith. "Jessie Willcox Smith (September 6, 1863 May 3, 1935) was one of the most prominent female illustrators in the United States during the Golden Age of American illustration. She was a prolific contributor to respected books and magazines during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. She illustrated stories and articles for clients such as Century, Collier's, Leslie's Weekly, Harper's, McClure's, Scribners, and the Ladies' Home Journal. She had an ongoing relationship with Good Housekeeping, including the long-running Mother Goose series of illustrations and then creating all the covers from December 1917 to 1933. Among the more than 60 books that Smith illustrated were Louisa May Alcott's Little Women and An Old-Fashioned Girl, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's Evangeline, and Robert Louis Stevenson's A Child's Garden of Verses.".
