It begins on Manhattan's Lower East Side where young Jacob Javits, the son of immigrant parents, grew up. It climaxes with his bid for a fifth term as the senior Senator from New York. A maverick from the beginning, Javits, though liberal, joined the Republican party in a favorable response to Fiorello La Guardia and in reaction to Tammany Hall's efforts to control votes. In a memoir that is both personal and political, Senator Javits comments on a lifetime of involvement in a multitude of issues. He speaks candidly of his commuter marriage to Marian Javits and offers numerous portraits of American and foreign political leaders, including Lyndon Johnson, John F. Kennedy, Nelson Rockefeller, Thomas Dewey, Golda Meir, Anwar Sadat, and many others. He also reviews the consequences of Watergate and speculates on the future of New York City, the world economy, and the ~ prospects for peace.
