Pages have slight foxing, tanning and minor thumbing. Foxing more noticeable towards the start and end of the book and on text block edges. A few small edge tears to a few corners. Boards have some edge wear, with pronounced bumping and fraying to corners, while spine ends are crushed and frayed. Rather scratched, rubbed and marked overall. Some water staining and mottling to front. Slight stains. Gilt is bright.

Vg (no dj, lightly marked blue buckram cloth darkened on spine and round edges, blind tooled decoration to both boards, very minor area of loss at base of spine about 1/4", light edgewear and corners lightly curled but cloth not broken,clean yellow endpapers with no marks, only a couple of isolated spots title page and last page else no foxing, the pages are very clean and unmarked throughout and the binding tight, just a touch of faint age browning to pages, a very good sound copy in very good condition for its age) 12mo 379pp. Companion Shakspere. Contents: King Henry V; King Henry VI parts I, II, III; King Richard III; King Henry VIII. All pages are printed within ruled black borders with notes in column alongside. We have a copy of Volume I in almost identical format (described as a "portable edition") published 1852, but publisher's name not stated.

Hardcover. Etat : Good. No Jacket. In a green leather hardcover with five raised bands to spine and gilt titles and tooling to spine and front. No dust jacket. Marbled end papers. 832 pp., gilt edged, with a number of black and white illustrations. The book is in good condition with quite heavy shelf-wear to the extremities of the cover; the spine is largely split from the boards but still firmly attached, there is damage to the head and tail of the spine. The binding is a little slack. There is a dedication on the reverse of the ffep dated 1898. There is light foxing to the reverses of the feps, half title and last page of the index. There is very light tanning to the extremities of the pages which are otherwise clean and unmarked.

The hinges are beginning to crack, but the pages are all intact. The interior pages are unmarked. There is a small abrasion to the front flyleaf. Overall very good condition, pages very clean and bright, binding sound, slight rubbing externally, parts of title piece missing and joints starting to split at top of spine. particularly to top of spine.

Note, the complete works were sold in parts in paper wraps, and this constitutes only one part of the complete set. 200 pages, 5 full page engravings and engraved title page present.

The edition is known for its fine engraved illustrations as well as Knight's curious spelling of Shakspere. This volume contains 3 plays which are generally considered to be Shakespeare plus a number which are not (see image for contents). Bound in publisher's blue decorated cloth, moderate wear externally but binding sound, hinges starting to crack but sound, pages all clean with foxing to a few early and late pages.
