Collier c. 1900 [undated] as an 8 volume set, (I have several of the remaining volumes in my collection for sale). The green cloth covers look nice with gold embossed artwork and titles. Edges of text block are dyed red with black speckles. Frontipiece and tissue are intact. Good condition. The covers show edge wear particularly to the corners which are worn to the boards. The hinges are beginning to crack, but the pages are all intact. The interior pages are unmarked. There is a small abrasion to the front flyleaf. Some age spotting to blank endpapers, but text pages are bright and clean and free of foxing. An attractive set. Text in English. Preface of the biography states it is a new edition with large alterations and additional material based upon a volume published in 1843. No date but 1865 according to the preface in the Biography volume stating it has been 22 years since the 1843 first edition. Beautiful original matching publishers bindings - reddish brown cloth blindstamped and stamped in gilt and black with pictorial on spines. 4to 9 7/8" tall x 6 3/4". Speckled page edges. Numerous text figure engravings as well as 4 or more beautiful full page plate engravings per volume printed on thick paper. Number of pages per volume: 456pp; 446pp; 390pp; 485pp; 553pp and 507pp. A partial set missing the Tragedies in 2 volumes - Volume 1 and 2 of the set. Pages lightly toned. Beautiful bright and clean bindings - cloth shows no real signs of wear. Tightly bound. A few scattered fox spots - very little - otherwise clean unmarked texts. near Fine condition.
