Etat : New. Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Good. Entirely in Farsi (which I have no understanding of). I did find a book from an auction which is identical to my book and copied and pasted the Farsi title, clicked on translate, and got to the title Hafez Shiraz narrated by Ahmad Shamlou or Hafez Shiraz According To Ahmad Shamlou. Also the following: 'Hafez Shiraz narrated by Ahmad Shamlou is a narration of Hafez's Divan.' Please take a look at the photos. You can see how thick the book is. It's also fairly heavy so if the buyer is from outside of the United States the shipping will be higher than the quoted price, probably higher than the price of the book, because the weight will exceed the limit for first class shipping and will have to be shipped Priority. The book is in very nice shape. You can see the covers in the photos. They are very clean. The book is solidly bound from cover to cover. There are no binding issues. The covers are nicely tight. The cover edges and corners are in very good shape. The page edges are mostly clean. There are two smallish spots on the bottom page edge, not affecting the actual pages. The pages of the book are very clean. Scrolling through, I didn't find any instances of soiling. There are a lot of pages so it's possible I missed something, but they are very clean nonetheless. I didn't see any conspicuous creasing, no placeholder creases. I saw a few crinkles. There are no markings in the book. No one has written their name or anything else anywhere. There are no attachments, but there are two small, thin strips of residue from what must've been tape on both the front and rear inside cover. On the rear inside cover it looks like someone tried removing the tape and created a superficial scuff. There's also a small scuff off the top edge of the blank front end paper. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. There is a minor bit of soiling on the rear cover. There are small losses off the top edge of the front and spine, and one off the top edge of the rear cover. Finally, as you can see, there is a discoloration off the top edge of the front cover, the residue of a strip of tape which was once covering a tear, and there is one other smallish tear off the top edge of the front and one off the bottom edge of the front as well. For these reasons I've rated the dust jacket only Good. However, as you can see in the photos, it does not present badly. The flaps are clean but have some wear. The front flap has a sharp crease and its top corner, also little bit of wear at its top edge, and a small tear off its middle edge. The rear flap has a small crease at its top corner. The jacket is fitted with a protective cover.

[2], XLIV, 494; [4], 495-1011 pp."Very rare" first edition of the first English translation of the poems by Khwaja Shams-ud-Din Muhammad Hafez-e Shirazi known by his pen name Hafez, or Hafiz, "the memorizer; the (safe) keeper"; 1315-1390). This critical translation of The Divan of Hafez is printed at the expense of the translator and editor Henry Wilberforce Clarke (1840-1905) at the Central Press of the Government of India, Calcutta. Clark dedicated his translation to his uncle Henry M. Clarke of the Bengal civil service. In 1974 The Octagon Press published a facsimile edition of Clarke's translation.Hafez s collected works are regarded as a pinnacle of Persian literature and are often found in the homes of people in the Persian-speaking world, who learn his poems by heart and still use them as proverbs and sayings. Hafez wrote primarily in the literary genre of lyric poetry, or ghazals, the ideal style for expressing the ecstasy of divine inspiration in the mystical form of love poems. He is considered one of the early and prolific poets working in and shaping the Sufi philosophy (see the introduction by Gertrude Lowthian Bell to her annotated translation: Poems from the Divan of Hafiz (London 1897), esp. pp. 1-63).Henry Wilberforce Clarke was an officer in the British India corps of Bengal engineers, and the grandson of William Stanley Clarke, director (1815-1842) and chairman (1835-1836) of the East India Company. Clarke also translated poems by other Persian mystic poets including Saadi, Nizami and Suhrawardi, as well as writing some works himself. In good condition.l Peter Avery, The collected lyrics of Hafiz of Shiraz (2006); Parvin Loloi, Hafiz, master of Persian poetry: a critical bibliography (2004).

Livre
Single volume, illuminated manuscript on paper, in Persian, with 16 illuminated miniatures in the text, 80 leaves, incomplete (lacking at least 6 singles and some leaves mis-bound); double-column, 12 lines black nasta'liq, leaves ruled in gilt banners decorated with polychrome flowers, gilt banners and decorative blocks marking divisions in the texts, also decorated with polychrome flowers, outer edges of leaves a little water-stained and chipped, some light finger soiling and a few smudges, miniatures overall in bright and attractive condition, type-script description in English tipped-onto upper pastedown; housed in a contemporary sheep over pasteboards, covers ruled in gilt with repetitive floral arabesque motif to covers, spine a little sunned and extremities very lightly rubbed. islam24 42 A charming example of provincial Kashmiri book production presented here in an attractive contemporary Indian stamped binding. Hafez Shirazi (1315-1390 AD) is considered one of the greatest Persian poets, whose immensely popular poetry continues to thrive in modern day Iran and far across the international sphere, with many translations of his texts available worldwide. This particular manuscript includes a selection of his poetic material primarily sourced from his Divan and Ghazals, possibly copied by the scribe from memory as the structure of the text doesn't follow the standard canon of Hafez' works.
