Large volume with seven full page colour plates and tissue guards, a large folding colour map of the Sudan and Ethiopia, tipped in at rear. Green cloth binding with titles stamped in gilt on spine and large bird stamped in gilt on front cover. Dust jacket has bird print pastedown on front. A beautifully preserved copy, clean, unmarked and like new. The dust jacket has a large price clip on the bottom of front flap and a small amount of rubbing at edges.

This work was completed in four volumes over a period of 24 years by two different publishers, originally Gurney and Jackson and then Oliver and Boyd. All bound in green buckram with gilt embossed titles to the spine and gilt embossed birds to the front boards. Volumes one and two - upper edges gilt. Volumes I-IV side and lower fore-edges rought cut. Volumes one and two are missing their wrappers. Volume one. 1937. First edition.lxxvii, 285pp. Eight coloured plates by Archibald Thorburn including a tissue-guarded colour frontispiece and two coloured plates of eggs by Henrik Gronvold. Map and numerous photographs in black and white including a photogravure of Sir Jeffery Archer. Head and tail of spine and all four corners bumped. The textblock remains clean and tight. Three areas of sellotape ghosting to the front paste-down item that was taped in no longer present. The ink name, date and place of the British ornithologist Dr. Geoffrey Beven to the front endpaper (his ink name and date present to the front endpaper of all four volumes - with a place - Ventnor I.W. to the first two). A very short repaired tear of 6mm to the margin of one plate. Volume II, vii, 290-626pp. (no loss of text) has eight tissue-guarded colour plates including a frontispiece as called for. It has two tissue-guarded plates of eggs and a folding colour map as called for. One corner is bumped. The tail of the spine is lightly bumped and the head and a further corner are a little turned in. There is one vertical rub mark to the front paste-down and four small and not very noticable sellotape ghost marks to the rear pastedown. The textblock remains very clean, fresh and tight. Volume III, lxviii, 628-1042 pp. Six tissue-guarded colour plates of birds including a frontispiece. One tissue-guarded colour plate of eggs. A fold-out map to the end of the volume. The head of the spine and three corners bumped concealed by the wrapper, but with some associated creasing to these corners. The wrapper is not price-clipped with a little rubbing to the head and a couple of the corners. Volume IV, vii, 1045-1570pp. 7 tissue-guarded colour plates after Archibald Thorburn including the frontispiece. A colour folding-map to the rear of the volume. The tail of the spine and one corner bumped, the head of the spine and another corner lightly bumped. All with some associated slight or light creasing to the wrapper, which has not been price-clipped. There are four short tears and a couple of niks to the wrapper - all expertly repaired. The text-block remains very fresh and tight. A very good, tight clean set of first editions - a much sought after set.
